The capital of Lithuania was born around about 1323 at the confluence of the river Neris and Vilnia. All was good for the next 300 years… Then... 1654 the Russians massacre the population. 1795 the Russians annexed the city. 1812 Napoleon seizes the city. Uprisings in 1831 and 1863. WWI Germans occupy followed by the Poles. Poles return Lithuania. 1920 a Polish coup! Soviets in 1939, send 40,000 of the population to Gulags. 1943 the Germans slaughter 250,000 Jews. 1944 Soviets again!. Finally independence in 1991.
From such beginnings Vilnius has managed to evolve into a cosmopolitan city with diverse architecture. The old town is one of the largest in Europe and the city is now littered with great restaurants, bars and nightclubs populated, like all states that border the Baltic, by ridiculously attractive fairer sex and stoic brusque male counterparts. And of course a statue of their famous son, Frank Zapp
